It takes about the same time to get to one as the other. I for on prefer Universal. Disney is more for young kids, where as Universal is more for the big kids. If you choose Universal get the tickets for both parks for at least two days, you will need it to do most everything. If you go to Disney then get on the net and see which parks are best suited for you and your family. If it is just you two then get the MGM park and Pleasure Island tickets.
Hope this helps

I am sorry but I do not know which is closer to the aiport, but they are both in a reasonable driving distance.
As for the hotels, I have not stayed at the hard rock hotel at universal but I did stay at the Royal Pacific Hotel (its another one of universal’s hotels.) There were some pros and cons staying in a universal resort which I will tell you below but I must say that I did see the hard rock from the outside and it looked great… if its worth the money i dont know though.
If you want something cheaper, try the royal pacific. Its pool was great, and it had a water boat launch that takes you straight to eh universal parks (although hard rock has that as well.) It has some good food and the rooms were very nice!! Another pro for staying at a universal resort in general is that you get head of the line passes for all the rides which is great!
Royal Pacific hotel also has a luau show which was great and you may want to see that. I think it goes on saturday nights.
The only con about the universal hotels is that sometimes the staff seemed very unwilling to help us. There was one man at the guest relations who was GREAT! He knew our name and everytime we walked by he said hello by first and last name and asked us if we needed help. Every other staff member just seemed less willing to be there. But, everything else was great about our hotel. (except internet was extra so if you want that expect to pay more)
So.. my recommendation would be to go to the universal hotel but to opt for the cheaper one and go to Royal Pacific. Just don’t stay there if your not planning to go to unverisal, if your going to disney stay at a place near disney.
have fun and contact me if you have any other questions.

Universal Studios is closer because Disney World is going more towards Kissimmee, Florida.

they are boh about the same distance from the airport. it just depends on which way you go.
also i know that alot of resorts will have a shutle service to bring you to and from the airport and many times they also have shuttles to take you to the parks as well. call up fairfield see if they have services like that.
disney does have several resorts that are very modestly priced. for exaple the allstar resorts or pop century. it usually depends on the time of year you go. but it wouldn’t hurt to check it out. staying on disney property ahs so many benefits. like the shuttles and buses to bring you anywhere. also SO MANY dining options. also resort guests can someimes get into the parks earlier than everyone else.
check out this website and get a price quote, doesn’t hurt, and you might have an nicer and easier vacation:

They are both about the same distance. The Hard Rock Hotel is great – yes it is expensive but its worth it – but you should also look into saving some money on your hotel so you can have more fun!
When you go to universal you guys can enjoy the 2 parks and then go party at night at City Walks!
most hotels off Kirkman road or a hotel on Windhover Drive would be close and since they are not on the property they might also be a little cheaper. You would still be close enough to walk too! But I rather just drive across the street or the mile its better since normally your so tired after the day and night of fun!
Have a great time!

They are the same distance. I would suggest you not waste your money at Universal. My husband took two trips this year, one to Disney and one toe Universal. My husbands comment (which he hadn’t been to either) was Universal is like one of Disney’s farts. If you like simulation rides go with universal, at one of the two parks that is all there is. We were done with that park in three hours.

Speaking as someone who is about to turn 30 herself and who has lived in Orlando – my choice would be Universal Studios. The CityWalk area is a great night time hangout. Both are about the same distance from the airport and the Hard Rock Hotel would be very memorable for your husband. Enjoy.

universal is considerably closer. i live in orlando. do you plan on going to parks? i think guys are generally more interested in spending money on having fun than a hotel room. one of the problems with staying at hardrock is if you want to go to disney parks it takes forever.
